Default How long does parvo stay in the environment?

My family has not been exposed, but I'm asking for a friend. She had a pup who had parvo almost two years ago. The pup survived and my friend was told no new pups for at least 6 months. She has waited almost two years and fell in love with a pup (4 months old)from the shelter. She just adopted her Saturday. The surviving pup really needed a friend to play with. Both are lab mixes.

Took Daisy Mae to the vet today to get spayed and the vet freaked out when he found out she had parvo in her house. He said it could live in the environment for up to 5 years.

My friend was not impressed with this vet. And no it wasn't my vet. But I was just wondering if anyone here knew how long parvo would stay in the environment. I would hate to think that Daisy Mae was exposed and my friend is now worried sick about it.

I have never heard how long Parvo lasts but I found this on one site -

"Prior to 1977-78, parvovirus did not exist in the dog. The virus is a close relative of feline panleukopenia (feline distemper) and in fact, may have mutated from the cat and infected the dog in the late 1970šs. The virus is extremely hardy and survives for long periods outside its host. The virus will live in the environment up to 6 months and survives winter nicely under a blanket of snow where the temperature is usually around 25-28 degrees F. Extremely cold temperatures prior to snow fall will kill the virus. Sodium hypochlorite (bleach) is the only effective disinfecting agent. "

Ditto, what Lamby, said. That's what I heard too. It's hard to get out of the yard - but cleaning the house, with bleach, should be done. Top to bottom. Hopefully, she tossed the other dog's toys, too. Otherwise, they need to go. A new pup should have new toys, anyway. . . .

Hope Daisy Mae will be o.k.

She thouroughly cleaned the house and the toys have long since been gone. She's almost fanatic about cleaning anyway so I know the house has been disinfected several times over. Just hoping that almost 2 years is long enough.
